I got this piece of land as a wedding gift, about five years ago. At the time it was probably worth a couple thousand dollars, although it is more now. The developer had not put in the road at that time, so the land was not worth too much. I cleared it myself, borrowed my buddy’s bulldozer and dump truck a couple of times. Pretty much cleared all the trees that droped leaves save for a half dozen red oak trees. Right now I am planning the house, looking to find home security installer who does a bit of home automation as well. Already decided that I am going to wire the place up with a system to help me save on the power bill. In fact we are going to adopt a design which uses the ground itself and the sun to help us save on power consumption. It will be a split level house dug into the South facing side of a nice little slope. Of course that means a big part of the house will partially under the ground.
I am getting the idea from a much more radical design called an Earth ship, which is just totally weird looking, but completely efficient. You are basically building a cave in these designs, which I do not want to do. Instead I am going to make the lower part of the house protected by geothermal concepts from changes in temperature. Then I am going to pretty much put two huge sun rooms in front of the house. In essence it will be like a huge porch, but glassed in like a big greenhouse. In the Winter this should provide a lot of warmth for the upper floor of the house, but I have to figure out if that really makes sense.
